Formula

WHR = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference

Worked example

85 cm ÷ 100 cm = 0.85

What the waist-to-hip ratio calculator does

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares the circumference of your waist to that of your hips. It is a simple but powerful indicator of where you store fat, which the WHO recognises as an important marker of metabolic and cardiovascular health — often more telling than weight or BMI alone.

How the calculation works

WHR is your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. The resulting ratio is interpreted against sex-specific thresholds, because healthy fat distribution differs between men and women. The calculator also classifies your shape as "apple" (more abdominal fat) or "pear" (more fat around the hips).

How to interpret your result

For men, a ratio below 0.90 is low risk, 0.90–0.99 moderate, and 1.0 or above high. For women, below 0.80 is low risk, 0.80–0.84 moderate, and 0.85 or above high. An apple shape, with more fat stored around the abdomen, carries greater health risk than a pear shape, even at the same overall weight.

Health recommendations

Reducing abdominal fat through a calorie deficit, regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management improves your WHR over time. Measure consistently — same time of day, relaxed abdomen, level tape. Use this with the Body Fat and BMI calculators for a rounded view of your health.

FAQ

+What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?

Below 0.90 for men and below 0.80 for women is associated with lower health risk.

+Why does WHR matter?

Fat carried around the waist (abdominal fat) is linked to higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

+How do I measure correctly?

Measure the narrowest part of your waist and the widest part of your hips with a level tape.
