kW vs HP Explained — and How to Convert Between Them

Power is power, but the units have different histories. 1 mechanical HP equals 745.7 W (or 0.7457 kW). 1 kW equals 1.341 HP.

For motor sizing, always check whether the nameplate states mechanical HP (output) or electrical kW (input). Electrical kW input divided by motor efficiency gives mechanical output. Get this wrong and the drivetrain ends up undersized.
